I would like to commend Bill and Lyn Roche. They head up the Alzheimer's support group that meets at Crown Point Assisting Living Facility on Thursdays at 1 p.m. I was the speaker at the meeting on Thursday, Dec. 6. As a podiatrist I spoke about foot care, but I was very impressed by the way the Roches take "care" of these "caregivers" and the patience they have with the attendees who have Alzheimer's. ...more

The boy should have been at his school's after-school program, but was sent home on a school bus. Fortunately, a stay-at-home neighbor spotted the child and notified his mother. But about a month later it happened again; the kindergartner was bused home when he should have remained at school. Once again the neighbor took the child in. A call to the school district resulted in a "lackadaisical" response, according to Stacy Sorton, whose son attends Avon Elementary School. ...more

LAKE PLACID –– It took a mishap to get Kathy Rouse started, but since age 24, it's been a life-long journey. It began when her doctor suggested an exercise program after she injured her back and put on weight. That's when Rouse lost 30 pounds and never gained it back. "I've always enjoyed exercising," she said."It's the highlight of my day." Rouse moved to Lake Placid 18 years ago and started teaching exercise. She'd moved from Elmira, N.Y., where she had her own aerobics studio for eight years. Now at age 58, Rouse continues her teaching with low-impact walking aerobics classes at 8 a.m. and Pilates at 9 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesdays and Thursdays she teaches step aerobics at 4:30 p.m. and Pilates at 5:30 p.m. ...more
