Following his first day after a full night's sleep in days, Russ Oberbroeckling, chairman of the 2009 Temple Terrace Relay for Life, couldn't be happier. The event he and his committee spent weeks preparing for is history. But, best of all, the March 27-28 overnight fundraiser netted $130,000 of its $170,000 goal set by the Tampa office of American Cancer Society. "Deep down I was hoping we'd reach the goal, but $130,000 is fantastic considering the state of the economy," said Oberbroeckling, who voluntarily took charge of the event for the second time. ...more

Moratorium Magic In the first wave of development in Florida, there was too much water so the Army Corp of Engineers dug canals to drain land. Now there is too little water to support development in many suburban areas, so the Legislature is considering Senate Bill 2424, which would essentially give the state control of water distribution and price. In other words, the state could divert water from rural areas to provide continued development in metro areas like Tampa and St. Pete. ...more

Temple Terrace police have filed charges against a couple and their son accused of doctor-shopping during the past 18 months, obtaining prescriptions for thousands of oxycodone and Xanax pills and selling them on the street. Ricky Earl Herc, 62, and his wife, Terry Ann, 47, remained in the Orient Road Jail this morning. No bail was set. Their 21-year-old son was not around when the couple were arrested Thursday, but police did file charges against Jacob Herc, who lived at the family home at 12610 Nicole Lane. ...more
