Our country's national debt is in the trillions of dollars, most Americans are head-over-heels in personal debt, most have not saved anything for retirement - and yet, the government's answer is to reward us with a tax rebate to "stimulate" the economy. Regarding "Mortgage CEO Wants A Federal Rescue" (Business, Dec. 4): The mortgage mess is about to get messier. The bailout proposed by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson will spread the mess to tax-exempt bond funds, stealing money from many retirees that have invested in the bond funds to get by in retirement. It all deprives income that eases the burden on the taxpayers of this country. ...more

For starters, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average college graduate has $19,000 of debt, not including credit cards.
