Residents of Phuket, Thailand, are celebrating the Vegetarian Festival, which calls on devotees to purify themselves as they take on the sins of the community. A vegetarian or vegan diet is eaten for up to 10 days as a rite of spiritual cleansing. Devotees whom the gods enter during the festival manifest supernatural powers and perform feats such as walking on hot coals to bring good luck to the community. While many couples across the country went out of their way to schedule their weddings for Aug. 8 as a way of securing good luck, a South Shore couple took the theme in a slightly different direction. Carmine and Joanna Caporaso planned for their second son, Ryan, to be born on Aug. 8 at Brandon Regional Hospital. However, the Caporasos ended up taking the 8-8-08 gimmick to the extreme — the infant was born precisely at 8:08 a.m. "We had selected that date a while ago and my surgery was scheduled for 7:30 a.m.," Joanna said.
