Center Helps Adults Activate Their Days

Published: March 11, 2009

For caregivers and those they care for involved in Sun City Center United Methodist Church's "Adult Activity Center," the word "activity" stands out.

Formerly known as the church's "Caregiver's Day Out Ministry," the group was originally designed to give the caregivers of home-bound residents a way and place to catch up on chores and errands or, if they chose, rest, relax and socialize.

But last April, the program was renamed "Adult Activity Center" and reorganized to include a place for both caregivers and those being cared for to mingle, socialize, go on outings as well as giving them time to talk and listen - one of the group's most important aspects.

Gail Littlefield, activities center director, said the AAC was reworked to provide inclusive community support through weekly activities with others.

For those who aren't caregivers, Littlefield said there are a few requirements: the participant shouldn't be a "wandering" risk; must be OK in an unlocked facility; must be able to handle personal hygiene; should be able to self-administer medication; and must undergo an evaluation as part of the application process.

Caregivers should be prepared to help out and participate in activities in addition to spending time outside the center, said Littlefield. All sessions are staffed by Certified Nursing Assistants to provide safety and care for loved ones.

"The caregivers need a break to regroup sometimes," she said. "Whether it's to get out for a hair appointment or get in some golf, it's just to take a break without having to worry."

The AAC meets Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. at the church, 1210 Del Webb Blvd. Those participating must commit monthly to four sessions.

But for those already involved, that stipulation is easy - they said they looked forward to attending the AAC. They said they enjoy the indoor activities, as well as regularly scheduled field trips around Hillsborough County.

Henry and Helen Cooper, both 61, who helped start the original caregivers' group, said the AAC is a benefit to both parties. Henry suffered a stroke 15 years ago and now relies on his wife to attend too many of his personal needs.

"It's great. She gets to get me out of the house and we play board games, paint," said Henry, a retired certified public accountant. "I think it's really more of an advantage to the caregivers more than the participants. It gives them a break to take care of things they need to."

To participate in the AAC, the cost is $15 to register and then $22 per session, paid on a monthly basis.

Although the church isn't directly involved in the group's functions, it does provide space and support.
