Barnes Announces New Board Responsibilities

Published: January 14, 2009

Ed Barnes, who was installed as president of the Sun City Center Community Association on Jan. 7, has announced board member responsibilities for the coming year.

While I won't bore you with the full listings, some are more interesting than others.

Hopefully, this list will provide you with a point of contact on a specific subject should you ever need one.

Barnes, for instance, will be the point of contact with the developer (WCI at this time) as well as the Hillsborough Board of County Commissioners and other governmental entities, Save Our Hospital. He will chair the 1984 Agreement Assessment Task Force. In addition, he will oversee audit, legal and planning.

Vice President Anne Marie Leblanc continues as club liaison director, co-chair of the Community Leaders Group, chair of FunFest and liaison on room reservations.

Corporate Secretary Don Schings keeps the CA's corporate records and liaisons with Government Affairs and Governing Rules. He also represents the CA at the South Shore Round Table and has oversight on Age and Family restrictions.

Neil Rothfeld is treasurer, but is not a director. He oversees financial records, the accountant, the budget committee and purchasing procedure.

New board member Al Alderman becomes assistant Club Liaison Director and will liaise with the Entertainment and Development and Grants committees.

As a returning board member, I will chair the Hardship Panel, have oversight on the membership directory, be the point of contact on Resident Relations and liaison with the Consumer Affairs committee and the golf community.

New board member Anne Cross will be the board representative to SCC Community Planning, liaise with the Search Committee and have oversight on the director's handbook and the membership e-mail list.
Returning board member Howie Griffin is the co-chair on the Community Leaders group, liaise with the Council of Owner-Association Presidents (CO-AP), and is the point of contact on restrictive covenants and area planned development Modification requests.

Returning member Patrick Long is the chairman of The Projects Office, monitors maintenance activities, has oversight on the facilities long range plan, is liaison to the fitness center and bingo committees and is board representative on the North Lakes Golf Course Issue.

New member Woody Nelson, is the liaison to the Elections Committee and C.E.R.T, has oversight on the information technology long range plan and is the point of contact on Community Awards.

Signs of The Times

WCI's Marketing group has an Internet advertisement offering free golf for three years when an individual or a couple buys a to-be-built home in Sun City Center, Pelican Preserve or Venetian Golf & River Club. It's free greens fees for the three years, but the buyer must pay the prevailing caret fee rate. (I'm unsure whether this means a trail fee here.)

What interests me in this is that WCI still considers SCC a golf "mecca" even though some of our own citizens don't. If anyone is listening out there, here's the mantra you should be thinking about: The home values - your home values - depend on SCC being attractive to golfers. The main reason there are fewer golfers playing in SCC today is that the people who came to play golf are still here, but many have grown older in the 20 or 30 years they have been in residence and simply don't play anymore. But they like the golf ambiance, many live on golf courses and they will stay here the rest of their lives.

By the way, another sign of the times is the ad I received in the mail to subscribe to Fortune magazine. The cover price for a year is $124.75, the ad says. The offer is for a year at $10. In these economic conditions it seems the price of a Fortune is going down. Guard your assets carefully and the golf courses here are one of your biggest fortunes in your portfolio!

Bob Black is a member of the Sun City Center Community Association's board of directors.
