Work on a major water pipeline along U.S. Highway 301 north of Sun City Center to Bullfrog Creek could affect water pressure in Sun City Center and Wimauma for the next three to four weeks.
As part of the Florida Department of Transportation's U.S. 301 widening project from two to six lanes, with raised medians - expected to be completed in 2012 - a 36-inch PVC pipeline is being relocated, due to the path of pilings that will be constructed for a new bridge over Bullfrog Creek. The new water pipeline will run in tandem with the existing 16-inch line, serving customers south of Little Bullfrog Creek and east of Interstate 75.
Currently, the contractor is working primarily from the south to the north on the east side of U.S. 301. The work includes clearing the FDOT right of way, installing new drainage and water pipes, building new ponds, constructing the new northbound roadway and building the multi-use path. This phase of the work is expected to take approximately two years.
Michelle Van Dyke, community relations coordinator for Water Resources Services, said the line was shut down Feb. 6 and will remain out of service until late March.
Van Dyke said water services will continue to be provided through the existing 16-inch line; however, some customers may experience a decrease in water pressure, especially if they water their lawns more often as spring and summer arrives.
"We don't anticipate any major problems; we're just giving everyone a heads-up," said Van Dyke. "There might be some reduced pressure, particularly as the weather gets warmer and people start irrigating their lawns."
Overall, the $61 million project is going as planned.
Kris Carson, DOT spokesperson, said the state doesn't foresee any delays in getting the widening completed on time.
"The job is going well and is on schedule at this point," said Carson. "Utility relocations continue as well as storm drain installations and pond excavations."
Van Dyke said any county water customers who experience serious problems with their water pressure during this period should call Water Resources Services, (813) 744-5600.
