Published: February 11, 2009

Members of this year's FunFest committee are planning a birthday bash complete with animals from Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, music, entertainment and a variety of food.

More than 5,000 people are expected to attend the 10th annual FunFest event March 21 at the main complex of the Sun City Center Community Association, 1009 N. Pebble Beach Blvd.

Committee members are seeking volunteers to man booths and serve as greeters.

Molly Tenney, a member of the committee in charge of the food court, said the event sponsored by the SCC Community Association will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. She said there will be no outside food vendors this year.

"In the food court, they can expect the same sorts of things they had last year," she said. "There will be a birthday cake celebrating the anniversary."

In addition to the edible cake, members of the Sawdust Engineers are constructing a giant cake which will be filled with balloons.

"I think it will be a great one," Tenney said. "We will have plenty of food, drinks and great booths displaying wonderful things."

She said at least 10 clubs will sell food such as ice cream, desserts, hamburgers and ethnic foods.

Tenney, who is the president of the Elegant Gardeners Club of Sun City Center, said her club will be selling plants at the FunFest.

"It's a way to highlight the clubs," she said. "There are always wonderful things for sale. We are talking about dancing demonstrations this year to highlight our new dance studio."

Phyllis Hodges of Sun City, in charge of publicity for the event, said Ann Marie Leblanc and Jane Keegan are serving as the co-chairs of the FunFest Birthday Bash committee.

"It's the 10th anniversary," Hodges said. "The purpose of it was to showcase the clubs and showcase the Sun City Center lifestyle. We draw people from all of Sun City Center. We want to draw people from anywhere in the surrounding areas. One of the new things is we will have animals from Lowry Park Zoo."

She said the committee is planning to bring back the Health Fair that was a hit at last year's FunFest.
