'Tis said that the pixies planted a Juniper tree at the gates of the Otherworld, and it must be true, for residents at Freedom Plaza were transported through those magical gates by two talented "daughters of the auld sod" who call their musical duo, appropriately, Juniper.
It happened on March 17 - that day when half the world is Irish and the other half only wishes they were - at the St. Patty's Sip and Song Party in Freedom Plaza Auditorium. That first fiery note bowed on the fiddle set toes tapping; the lilting rhythm of snappy Irish tunes set hands clapping and soulful melodies that can rend even a non-Irish heart brought a tear to the eye.
Irish eyes, along with all others, were soon smiling again, however, as Juniper rounded out their program with a wide range of Celtic songs. From jigs done in pubs, to traditional tunes sung around the hearthside, to the sound of a shepherd's pipe echoing across the hills, the music of Ireland reflects a rich Celtic heritage. Frances Pisacane and Jasmine Hart, who make up Juniper, have become widely known, very successful and highly respected in folk music circles for their authentic presentation of this moving, yet entertaining, genre. Their commercial CDs maintain high ratings and have gleaned several coveted awards.
The "Sip" of the Sip and Song Party was supplied by (what else?) green beer and the "Song" portion was highlighted by a customary Irish sing-along, accompaniment courtesy of Juniper. Even the half of the audience who "only wished they were Irish" joined in lustily to tunes such as Sweet Rosie O'Grady and Clancy Lowered the Boom.
The only regrets expressed at the event concerned the unhappy fact that March 17 comes only once a year. It was suggested that Freedom Plaza designate at least one other day, annually, when "wearing of the green" is mandatory and a Sip and Song Party - in anticipation of St. Patrick's Day, of course - can be held.
Therefore, don't be surprised to see, in almost any coming month, Freedom Plaza residents decked out in green clothing, enjoying green beer and offering their various renditions of "Danny Boy."
