SUN CITY CENTER - Their ancestors survived the Great Potato Famine of 1845–49.
Paddy Cooney of Sun City Center said it's amazing to him how many people of Irish descent live in Sun City Center.
Cooney helped start a new Irish club in Sun City Center called "The Irish Connection."
"I felt a lot of people when we go to dances here and go to social events and golf, quite a lot of them have Irish names," he said. "Some of them it goes back three or four generations at least. The group has applied to the CA to be registered as an official group.
Cooney said the Irish Connection club is a social club for people of Irish birth or descent or people who have an interest in Ireland, people or culture.
Club leaders include Pat Garland, chairman, Ron Fitzgerald, the vice chairman, Kathleen Kelly, secretary and Bob Deutel, treasurer.
