CA Plans First Holiday Walk

Published: November 26, 2008

Santa Claus' helpers in Sun City Center have been busy preparing for the area's first Holiday Walk Dec. 13 at the SCC Community Association's main complex on North Pebble Beach Boulevard.

Phyllis Hodges of Sun City Center, a volunteer for the holiday walk committee, said members of the CA decorating committee will be as busy as Santa's elves transforming the atrium into a winter wonderland for the event.

"It will be similar to FunFest only on a much smaller scale with the holiday theme," said Hodges, adding the event is open to people from the surrounding communities. "It adds to the holiday spirit."

She said the event includes a $4 breakfast complete with eggs, sausage, pancakes, toast, juice and coffee in the Florida Room from 8 a.m. to noon. The holiday walk continues until 2 p.m.
Joe Kuhn is organizing the breakfast, and needs volunteers to serve.

"It's the first time we have tried to do it," Hodges said. "We are hoping it will be an annual event."

She said all of the clubrooms will be open and people will be selling their holiday crafts and gift items.

"You can walk around the campus and see all the things that are there," she said. "The model railroad club will be open. Any visitors in town can bring their grandchildren."

Hodges said the SCC Performing Arts Club will have two 20-minute presentations of holiday music at 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Rollins Theater followed by presentations by John Bower on the topic of living in SCC.

Ann Marie Leblanc, a director for the SCC CA is chairing the committee for the holiday walk. She also came up with the idea.

"We usually do not decorate for the holidays very much but this year we are going out and we hope people will come out and stroll together and visit some of our shops that are here and maybe have breakfast," Leblanc said. "The whole idea is to have a nice feeling across the campus. I think it's going to be achieved."

Leblanc said she came up with the idea after thinking about the increase in the number of SCC residents who live in SCC year round.

"Since there is no place like home for the holidays, we will start at the information center, which is our only home on campus," said Leblanc, adding the red and blue bows and other decorations will add to the festive spirit. "It will be worth seeing for the holidays.

People can also expect caroling as well as complimentary Christmas cookies, coffee and punch.

"Singing is so good for the heart," she noted.

Unlike FunFest, the event will not include outside vendors.

To volunteer, call Ann Marie Leblanc at (813) 633-1979. Free refreshments also will be offered in the club rooms.
