Washing a pet in the hot sun is not always a fun chore, but the volunteer job may be a little easier at a no-kill animal shelter in Ruskin, thanks to a donation by the Dog Club of Sun City Center.
Don Hinderliter of Kings Point, a member of the club and the president of Critter Adoption & Rescue Effort, Inc. (C.A.R.E.), said the dog club recently donated a patio cover for the shelter.
Hinderliter, a retired federal employee from Washington D.C., has been a volunteer for C.A.R.E. since he moved to Florida six years ago. He said the blue canvas top cover will be used for the wash area for the cat facility. The donation was the former pavilion at the club's dog park before they replaced it with a more permanent structure.
"We cut it in half and put half over washing area and the other half we will use to cover the entry way between our two buildings," he said. "This was very beneficial to us."
Hinderliter said he is promoting the adoption off senior animals during the month of November.
November is recognized by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and Petfinder.com as Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month.
"Senior pets are much more difficult to adopt than puppies and kittens," he said. "It's the cute factor with kitties and puppies."
And, as with most things, age is a factor.
"Older animals like older people are set in their ways," he said.
He said older pets tend to be less hyper and have fewer medical surprises which make them ideal choices for older pet owners. They demand less training and supervision, according to Hinderliter.
He said senior pets are typically 5 to 7 years of age.
"Older pets won't climb up drapes and are less rambunctious," said Hinderliter, adding the pets offer affection and love.
