After making a champagne toast at the New Year's Eve Celebration at Community Hall or celebrating with friends and family at home, most people can wait another day before keeping their resolutions to become more physically active.
Sue Batt, who organizes hikes for the Funsquad, said her group plans a Jan. 2 hike to the Little Manatee State Park.
"Since it's Jan. 2, it's a good way to jump right in and keep New Year resolutions. It's the beginning of the year," Batt said. "It's an exceptionally nice hike because it's scenic. It's got a savannah area along the river and trails that wander through. They have posters that point out different things in nature."
Batt plans once a month hikes to various locations, including special festivals.
"In December we did a Jingle Bell Walk in St. Petersburg along the Bay so you could look at the lights," she said. "I was away, so we weren't able to go this year but we have gone in the past. It's quite lovely."
In addition to meeting new friends, members of the Funsquad also get the chance to see new areas and stay physically fit.
"We try to keep in shape. It's a challenge this time of year," Batt said.
Her husband, Matt Batt, said the group will meet Jan. 2 at 9 a.m. at Community Hall.
He said once they arrive at the Little Manatee State Park, they will walk a 6-mile loop trail. The cost is $3 per car to enter the park.
"We joined the group in September," Matt Batt said. "It's great people in Sun City Center."
