After Death

Published: December 31, 2008

John Coffin, chief commander of the Second City of London's Police, is horrified when a package of bones with his initials on it is found outside his former home. "Coffin's Ghost" by Gwendolyn Butler is a reminder that events in our lives which we may have tried to forget or hide, often come back to haunt us in unexpected ways. Coffin's old home is now a shelter for battered women and a certain amount of suspicion about his past centers on him. Coffin must explain part of this past to his actress wife Stella Pinero, and hope she will be understanding. He hopes the information will not jeopardize their happiness. Then he must work to solve the mystery of whose bones the package contains and who hates him so much they would like to see his reputation permanently tarnished. The hunt means Coffin must try to resurrect the past without causing more harm to anyone else, a seemingly impossible task as he tries to find out the name of his "ghost."

When talking about life after death, Elizabeth Kubler-Ross says knowledge helps "but if you do not use your head and your heart and your soul, you are not going to help a single human being." Ross uses all of these faculties in her inspirational book "On Life after Death." She argues that at this point in our time, as mankind faces possible extinction, it is important to understand that we must learn not to be afraid for death does not exist. Ross believes life exists after the physical body dies and that we are living in a temporary house rather like a cocoon and when we shed our physical bodies were become as free as butterflies. She uses a number of "near death" experiences to illustrate how she came to her philosophy. As she discusses her ideas about what will happen to us after life on this earth, she suggests we open our minds and not be negative while sharing and trying to understand these experiences.
